Caldera Brewery & Restaurant

Caldera has been brewing in Ashland since 1997, and it holds a small piece of history: it was the first craft brewery in Oregon to put its beer in cans. The brewpub on Clover Lane is where to drink it at source.

It’s a big, glass-fronted building on the south edge of town with genuinely good views out to the Siskiyou and Cascade foothills — the reason to angle for a window table or the patio. Inside it’s relaxed and unpretentious, with a long list of house beers on tap and a kitchen that goes well beyond the usual brewpub obligation.

Order the flight. The IPAs are what built the reputation, but the seasonals and the darker beers are where the brewers seem to be having the most fun, and a flight lets you find out which camp you’re in for the price of a pint or two.

It’s dog-friendly on the patio, which matters if you’re staying in one of our pet-friendly homes. Check current hours before you set off — it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and it’s a short drive rather than a walk from downtown, so plan your ride home.
