Inside The Peerless Hotel: Ashland’s Historic Boutique Stay

The historic Peerless Hotel building in the Railroad District of Ashland, Oregon

Some buildings are worth staying in for their own sake. The Peerless Hotel, in Ashland’s Railroad District, is one of them — and we’re proud to look after its rooms.

A building with a working history

The Peerless went up in 1900 to house railroad workers, back when Ashland was a rail town first and a theater town not at all. The Southern Pacific line brought the crews, and the crews needed beds. When the railroad’s importance faded, the building could easily have gone the way of most of its contemporaries. It didn’t.

What survived is a small, characterful hotel where the period detail is real rather than applied — high ceilings, tall windows, proportions that modern construction simply doesn’t produce.

Rooms with their own personalities

There’s no standard room here, which is exactly the appeal. The Honeymoon Suite has a private jacuzzi and mountain views. The Anniversary Suite is built around twin soaking tubs. Signature Room #6 has a clawfoot tub, and the Junior Suites each have their own jacuzzi tubs.

Signature ADA Room #1, the Artist’s Abode, is fully accessible — worth flagging, because genuinely accessible rooms in century-old buildings are rare.

Every room is different in size, layout and light, so it’s worth reading the individual listings rather than assuming they’re interchangeable. They aren’t.

The location does a lot of work

The Railroad District is a ten-minute walk from the downtown Plaza and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival campus, which means you can park once and leave the car alone. Lithia Park is a little further on. Restaurants, wine bars and the theaters are all comfortably on foot.

It’s also quieter than staying directly on Main Street — a real advantage after an evening performance.
