The Best Time to Visit Southern Oregon: A Season-by-Season Guide

View over the Rogue Valley farmland and mesas from Upper Table Rock near Medford, Oregon

Southern Oregon doesn’t really have an off-season — it has four quite different ones, and the right answer depends entirely on what you came for. Here’s how the year actually feels in the Rogue Valley.

Spring (March–May)

The valley greens up fast. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival opens in mid-March, which means Ashland wakes up after a quiet winter, but rates and crowds haven’t caught up yet. Wildflowers come on strong at Upper and Lower Table Rock outside Medford — one of the best short hikes in the region, and at its peak in April.

Expect rain. Expect it to pass. Pack layers and a shell and you’ll be fine.

Summer (June–August)

The busiest and hottest stretch, with valley temperatures regularly climbing into the 90s and occasionally past 100°F. This is when the Rogue River comes into its own — rafting, jet boats and swimming holes — and when the Britt Festival runs its outdoor concert series in Jacksonville.

Crater Lake’s Rim Drive is fully open, usually from July. Book early; July and August are the two months where waiting rarely pays off. Air conditioning matters, and every one of our homes has it.

Fall (September–October)

Our favorite, and not a close contest. The heat breaks, the crowds thin, OSF is still running through late October, and the Applegate Valley moves into harvest. The vineyards turn gold, the light gets long, and you can get a table without booking three weeks out.

If you only have one window to choose from, choose late September.

Winter (November–February)

The quietest and best-value season. Mount Ashland, twenty minutes up the hill from town, runs lifts on around 200 inches of average annual snowfall and is refreshingly unpretentious. Down in the valley it rarely snows much at all, so you can ski in the morning and walk downtown Ashland in the afternoon.

This is hot tub and fire pit season, and it’s when our homes with those features earn their keep. Crater Lake stays open at the south entrance for snowshoeing.

The short answer

Come in September or early October for the best all-round trip. Come in July for the river. Come in January if you want Southern Oregon largely to yourself — and for the lowest rates of the year.
