Ashland punches enormously above its weight for a town of 21,000 people. Credit the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which for ninety years has brought in audiences who expect to eat well — and credit the Rogue Valley itself, which grows an absurd amount of what ends up on the plate.
Start on the Plaza
Downtown Ashland is walkable in the truest sense: you can eat at four different places in one evening without moving your car. Larks, on the ground floor of the historic Ashland Springs Hotel, is our standing recommendation for a first night — farm-to-table cooking that predates the buzzword, and a wine list heavy on Southern Oregon bottles you won’t find elsewhere.
For something livelier, the Plaza and East Main are lined with wine bars, taprooms and small kitchens that fill up fast between 5 and 6:30 PM as the pre-theater crowd moves through. That rush is real. Eat before it or after it, and you’ll have a far better time.
Beyond downtown
Caldera Brewery & Restaurant on Clover Lane is Ashland’s original craft brewery — the first in Oregon to can its beer — with mountain views and a dog-friendly patio. It’s a short drive rather than a walk.
Head fifteen minutes north and Talent and Phoenix have quietly become worth the trip on their own, with small farm-driven kitchens serving what was picked that week. Medford brings more range again, and Jacksonville’s handful of restaurants sit inside a preserved 1850s gold rush town.
Eat like you live here
The Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market runs in Ashland and Medford through the growing season, and it is the single best way to understand why the restaurants here are so good. Most of our kitchens are fully equipped — plenty of guests do one big market run and cook at home for half the trip.
A few practical notes: book ahead on performance nights, many kitchens close between lunch and dinner, and Mondays and Tuesdays are common closing days across the valley. Always worth a call.
Staying downtown means you can walk to nearly all of it and leave the car parked. Browse our Ashland properties and see what’s available for your dates.
