Ashland sits near the southern edge of Oregon, about fifteen miles from the California line. It’s a straightforward place to reach — but there are a few things worth knowing before you book flights or set off up Interstate 5.
Flying in
Rogue Valley International–Medford Airport (MFR) is the closest option, roughly a 20-minute drive from Ashland and around 30 from Jacksonville. It’s small, easy, and connects through Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Los Angeles and Phoenix. You’ll almost always connect rather than fly direct, but you’ll be off the plane and in the car in about ten minutes.
The alternatives all involve a long drive: Portland is around five hours north, Sacramento about five hours south, and Eugene roughly three. They’re occasionally worth it on price, rarely worth it on time.
Driving up I-5
Most of our guests drive. From Portland it’s about four and a half hours; from San Francisco, closer to six.
The one stretch to plan around is the Siskiyou Pass, just south of Ashland, which tops out at 4,310 feet — the highest point on I-5 anywhere. From November through March it can pick up snow and ice, and ODOT will sometimes require chains or traction tires. Check TripCheck before you set out in winter, and don’t assume a clear valley means a clear pass.
Coming from the coast, Highway 199 through Cave Junction and the Illinois Valley is slower but considerably prettier.
Getting around once you’re here
You’ll want a car for the Rogue Valley — Crater Lake, the Applegate wineries and the Oregon Caves all need one. The exception is downtown Ashland: if you’re staying near the Plaza or the Railroad District, you can park on arrival and walk to the theaters, restaurants and Lithia Park for days.
Every one of our properties includes convenient or dedicated parking, which is not a given in a town built before cars were.
Arrival logistics
Check-in is from 4 PM and check-out is by 11 AM. All our homes use keyless self check-in, so a late flight or a slow drive isn’t a problem — no key handover to coordinate, no office hours to make. Early check-in is often possible on request, and late check-out can be arranged subject to availability.
