Southern Oregon catches people out. Visitors pack for one climate and get three — a valley floor that can hit 100°F, mountains that hold snow into June, and a coast two hours west that’s foggy and 60°F in August. Here’s how to pack once and cover all of it.
Layers, genuinely
The Rogue Valley swings hard between day and night, especially in spring and fall. A 90°F afternoon in Ashland can drop 30 degrees after dark. Pack a light base layer, a mid layer or fleece, and a packable shell, and you’ll be comfortable across almost anything the valley does.
The one item people most often regret leaving behind: a warm layer for evening performances at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The Allen Elizabethan Theatre is open to the sky, and it gets genuinely cold by the second half. Bring a jacket and a blanket if you have one.
Footwear
Downtown Ashland is walkable but hilly, and Lithia Park’s upper trails are proper dirt. Bring shoes you can walk several miles in. If Crater Lake, the Table Rocks or the Rogue River Trail are on the list, add real hiking shoes.
Season by season
Summer: sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle. The valley is hot and dry and dehydration sneaks up on people. Swimwear for the river — and for the hot tub, if your property has one.
Winter: a warm coat, and chains or traction tires if you’re driving I-5 over the Siskiyou Pass between November and March. Mount Ashland gear if you’re skiing — rentals are available on the mountain if you’d rather not haul it.
Spring and fall: a waterproof shell. Rain here arrives quickly and leaves quickly.
