Day Trips from Ashland: Crater Lake, the Oregon Caves and the Rogue River

The deep blue water of Crater Lake ringed by caldera cliffs in Oregon

One of the quiet advantages of basing yourself in the Rogue Valley is how much sits within a morning’s drive. You can stay in one bed all week and still see a caldera lake, a marble cave system and a wild and scenic river.

Crater Lake National Park

About two hours northeast of Ashland, and worth every minute. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,943 feet, filling the collapsed caldera of Mount Mazama, which erupted roughly 7,700 years ago. There is no inflow and no outflow — it’s fed entirely by snow and rain, which is why the water is that startling blue.

Rim Drive, the 33-mile loop, is the classic outing. It typically opens fully in July and can close as early as October, so check park conditions before you commit. In winter the south entrance stays open and the rim becomes a snowshoe destination instead — different trip, equally good.

Set off early. The light is better, the parking is easier, and you’ll be back for dinner.

Oregon Caves National Monument

Southwest towards Cave Junction, roughly two hours from Ashland, is a marble cave system carved out of the Siskiyous. The guided tour takes you through around half a mile of passages at a constant 44°F, so bring a jacket regardless of what it’s doing outside. Tours are seasonal and often sell out — book ahead.

The drive itself is half the reason to go, winding up through the Illinois Valley. Our Cave Junction property puts you close enough to do it without the round trip.

The Rogue River

Closer to home, the Rogue is one of the original eight rivers protected under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Out of Grants Pass you can take a half-day whitewater raft trip, a gentler scenic float, or a jet boat run through Hellgate Canyon. Summer is peak season; late spring brings bigger water.

If you’d rather stay dry, the Rogue River Trail runs for 40 miles along the canyon, and you can walk as much or as little of it as you fancy.

Making it easy

All three work as day trips from Ashland, but Grants Pass and Cave Junction cut the driving considerably if you’re focused on the river or the caves.
