We’re on Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com and Expedia — and we’d genuinely rather tell you the honest version of this than pretend the marketplaces have no use. Here’s a straight comparison.
Where the marketplaces are actually good
Discovery. If you don’t yet know where you’re going, browsing Airbnb across three states is a reasonable way to narrow things down. Their search is excellent, the review volume is enormous, and if you’ve never heard of a host, a platform’s dispute process is a real form of reassurance.
Fair is fair: that’s a service, and for a first-time booking with an unknown operator, it has value.
Where booking direct wins
Price. The platforms charge you a guest service fee on top of the rate. Our direct bookings carry no guest service fee at all. Same property, lower total.
Communication. On a marketplace, your message goes through the platform’s system. Direct, it goes to Hannah — who manages every WanderLodges reservation personally, and who lives in the Rogue Valley rather than in a support center.
Flexibility. Marketplace policies are fixed by the marketplace. Extended stays, combining multiple Peerless rooms for a family, unusual arrival timing, a specific accessibility need — those need a human, and direct gets you one.
Local knowledge. We’ll tell you which of our homes actually suits your trip. If you’re here for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, walkability matters more than square footage. If you’re rafting the Rogue, Grants Pass beats Ashland. A search algorithm won’t tell you that.
The reasonable middle ground
Plenty of guests find us on a platform the first time and book direct every time after. We think that’s a completely sensible way to do it, and we don’t resent the introduction — it’s how a lot of our best repeat guests started.
But once you know who we are, the platform is no longer buying you anything you don’t already have.
